  • Section 115: Year 11 & 12 Art Song Solo

  • Section 103: Year 7-12 Open Duet or Trio Own Selection

  • Section 116: Year 7-12 AMEB (or equivalent) Own Choice

  • Section 118: Year 7-12 Golden Age Musical Theatre Ballad Solo 

  • Section 119: Year 7-12 Sacred Solo

Section 100: VCE Unit 1 & 2 Own Classical Selection

  • Perform one item of your choice in the classical style

  • Competitors must be enrolled in VCE Music Unit 1+2 with Classical Voice as their main instrument of study. 

Section 101: VCE Unit 3 & 4 'CVSC VCE Award'

  • Competitors will perform three contrasting items from their VCE Unit 3+4 program as a small recital.

  • Competitors must present at least two different languages and one unaccompanied work.  

  • Chosen repertoire must be sung in a classical style.

  • Competitors must be enrolled in VCE Unit 3+4 Music Repertoire or Music Inquiry focusing on Classical Voice performance. 

    • ​Please Note: Heats from previous years have been removed, and Section 101 now stands as a single section.

Section 102: Year 9 - 12 Novice Aria Award

  • Competitors are to perform one aria of their choice.

  • It may be from Oratorio, Opera, or Operetta.

  • Any period is acceptable. 

  • As this is a Novice Aria, competitors may perform works from sources such as the Schirmer 24 Italian Songs and Arias, Arie Antiche, or any other arietta, provided the work has an operatic origin. 

Section 103: Year 7 - 12 Duet or Trio Own Selection

  • Own choice duet or trio. 

  • May be from the classical repertoire, legit musical theatre, or a contemporary work written in a classical style. 

  • Some harmony must be demonstrated. 

Sections 104, 108, & 112: Own Choice Classical Solo

  • Own choice classical song solo. 

  • Any period is acceptable, including contemporary works written to be sun in a classical style. 

Sections 105, 109, & 113: Own Choice Musical Theatre Solo

  • Own choice solo from a musical or operetta. (Arias from an Opera not accepted). 

  • Must be in costume and character. 

  • Minimal props are optional.  

  • Competitors must demonstrate an appropriate level of stagecraft relevant to the chosen piece they are singing. Stagecraft and movement are taken into consideration in the adjudication of this section. 

  • Competitors may have another person on stage with them should their performance benefit from dialogue at the beginning or middle of the piece. Associate performer must not sing.  

Section 106, 110, & 114: Folk Song or Traditional Ballad Solo

  • Own choice traditional folk song or traditional ballad. 

  • May be in any language. 

  • Any arrangement is suitable. 

Section 107, 111, & 115: Art Song Solo

  • Own choice Art Song solo.

  • The work chosen must be performed in the original language in which it was written.  

    • Exceptions are made where a particular translation is commonly recognised as part of the informed performance practice of the selected work. ​

Section 116: AMEB (or equivalent) Own Choice Solo

  • Competitors are to perform one item from any AMEB (or equivalent) vocal syllabus.

  • Repertoire chosen must be from any current (2023) syllabus. 

Section 118: Golden Age Musical Theatre Ballad Solo

  • Competitors will perform one ballad from the Golden Age of Musical Theatre (Pre-1965). 

  • Competitors do not need to be in character or costume for this section. 

Section 119: Religious or Sacred Song

  • Competitors are to perform one song of their choice with a religious or sacred theme. 

Section 117: Undergraduate Aria Award

  • Competitors are to perform one aria (in the original language) of their own choice.

  • Competitors are required to be enrolled at an Australian university in an undergraduate course studying classical voice. 

  • Competitors in the Undergraduate Aria Award are excluded from consideration for any of the Scholarship Prizes on offer.
